BEST OF BROADWAY - DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Stardust Follies for 2005-2006 continues to showcase talented performers, creative dance numbers, leggy showgirls, sparkling costumes and the best of Broadway. We’ve saved the most popular numbers from last season and added new songs, fresh dance numbers, original comedy routines and different video images. Last year was a resounding success and bus-loads of people from near and far have told us so. Rather than sit on our laurels, we’ve made Stardust Follies even better, more unique and more sensational.

Looking at our new 2005-2006 season’s song list you can see we’ve kept crowd-pleasing numbers from last year. For example Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, As Time Goes By, I Can’t Say No, When I’m Not Near the Girl I love, Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better, All That Jazz, Time of My Life and our Al Jolson medley…the numbers audiences repeatedly said they loved. The same holds true for the major dance numbers such as There’s No Business Like Show Business, Can-Can, Forget About the Boy, Cabaret, Flashdance-What A feeling; Hooray For Hollywood, Diamond’s Are a Girls best Friend and so on. The songs that made the most impression last year are still there to enjoy this year. But to make sure we present the best of Broadway I’ve made a lot of changes.

The big change this year comes from the variety and blending of songs. We now present a wider range of blockbuster hits from past Broadway shows along with talked-about songs from current musicals. This year we offer the best of both worlds…memorable standards from early Broadway including South Pacific, Follow the Fleet, Singin’ In The Rain, West Side Story, Jekyll and Hyde  along with a taste of current musicals such as Les Miserables, Lion King, Chicago, Hairspray, Urinetown and Wicked.  I’ve introduced a new musical salute to Mae West, a new Charlie Chaplin skit and created a spectacular Busby Berkeley-style dance number guaranteed to astound.. In our second season we present 15 new production numbers representing half the show…but it’s the overall show with 30 songs that audiences will applaud, remember and rave about.

Irving Berlin’s memorable 1939 song Let’s Face The Music and Dance from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ film Follow The Fleet  has been developed into an elaborate dance extravaganza featuring Georgia Steel and Peter Fleming along with the entire line-up of Stardust Follies Dancers. This long-time favourite has been recorded by dozen of artists including Nat ‘King’ Cole, Frank Sinatra and recently by jazz vocalist Diana Krall. Audiences will be familiar with Nothing Like A Dame from South Pacific, the heart-rendering One Hand One Heart from West Side Story and, the world’s most famous dance number, Gene Kelly’s  unforgettable Singing In the Rain.

To balance the show we introduce music which may be new to audiences.  Award-winning songs that are so excellent they cry out to be seen and heard. In this to-good-miss category are Circle of Life from Lion King, the Gospel-style Run Freedom Run from Urinetown,  70’s era You Can’t Stop the Beat from Hairspray, plus Popular and As Long As Your Are Mine from the musical Wicked a nine time Tony Award winner.

Be sure to see Stardust Follies …the musical with Love, Laughs, Lyrics and Legs and the best of Broadway.
